2019 Summary

I see artists doing these every year and thought I'd give it a shot. I tried to choose the pieces I put the most time into or was most proud of, but some months had much more to choose from than others. And of course, there are so many unfinished pieces that I still claim to be working on that can't be used. So to wrap up a good year, here is a neat little summary chart!

A last-minute piece I did of my mom's dog for a Christmas card, which I forgot to post. I used a photo reference, but I really like it.

Art - City in the Trees

Obviously I have gotten off-track from my big project, but I'll get back to it eventually. This is just a doodle of Nyx's first day in Merecily. I tried several different ways to color the background but in the end I decided just to leave it blank.

Comic Sketch - The best music for drawing serial killers

Another doodle while I work on the big piece. While I was doing some practice sketches of Light from Death Note, I was listening to the calmest, most relaxing songs on my playlist.

Cursed Image - Longshanks-Ponyo

This is it. The most cursed art of all my characters. I'm working on a big style meme with Hayori that won't be finished for a long time, so here was a Ponyo (Ponyori?) joke I made for Meowmocha to tide this blog over for a bit.

Art - Winter Tune

I've really been enjoying this show, it's so relaxing! I love this harmonica-playing disaster, he's my favorite character by far. This was supposed to be simple and quick and smooth, but I ended up teaching myself how to paint digitally so I could get the contrast right. So many references... This was a very helpful video.

Art Challenge - Fall Detective

At least something I drew with Chickenpaint looks alright, even though I still don't have pen pressure. I designed a character from a theme and a color palette. Somehow he still ended up a detective... Perhaps it's time to branch out.

Finally finished! I've been wanting to draw this picture for a while and I'm really proud of it! Estelle was originally going to have a cracked earth-style astronaut helmet, but I decided to try some sci-fi tech instead.

For the Halloween-themed Oekaki Challenge on Chickensmoothie, I drew the ringleader of last year's haunted circus pets. I still don't have pen pressure so I just drew it in size 1.

Kate and her cats. She finally has a reference with all of her Pokemon. I'm not a huge fan of the way I drew Kate here but I really like the Pokemon!

Animation - Hayori

A much simpler animated doodle of my favorite phantom thief. I saw an animation like this on Art Fight and I wanted to try it out since it looked easy, and it was fun! I might try this style again because I can see things I could have done better.

School has picked up and I haven't had the time or the energy to draw, but I did a doodle illustration for my mini-fairy tale Der Silberspiegel that I wrote for my German class.

Sketch - Laughing at my Pain

Meowmocha mocks my despair. She cares not for matters of the heart, like the tragic deaths of all of my favorite characters. And to think, they all died thanks to The Power of Friendship™ and the thickest plot armor I've ever seen... It's a crime, I tell you, a crime!

Comic Sketch - The Snowager does me Dirty but the Water Faerie does me Dirtier

Meowmocha got blasted by the Snowager and went to the healing springs, only to be given a snowball. She wished she could throw the snowball right back at the Water Faerie.

Finally finished! I couldn't figure out the lighting until I tried coloring the lines white on a whim, and voilà! Good enough! And I finally drew a decent city. Turns out it helps to actually put effort into it, who knew?

A quickish sketch I did last-minute for Tokyoayaken. I got an awesome attack of Estelle at the same time from someone else, though, so I might have to do one more fast one before I call it quits. 11.71 points and 11 hours left.

Art Fight - Haruko Fujiwara

Tanitak's magical girl character, Winged Racer. She's a phantom thief fan as well so I felt obliged to make an attack before Art Fight ends. Only 3.62 points since it's just a sketch and there's a couple things I wish I had changed, but I like the angle.

This was supposed to be a sketch but I couldn't help but put effort into it. Drawbunii's gorgeous character Mic for her game Salem. 13.35 points, and now I wonder if I have time for any more attacks.

Second attack! This is all until after my trip. Hangflowers's character Effie, 14.76 points. I think the eyes are a little crooked but I couldn't easily fix them so oh well.

My first attack! Hopefully not my last... This-Guy's character Iris for Art Fight! 13.35 points, I'm pretty proud of it. I need to get more practice with lighting and shading.

Finally finished the second half of Hayori's reference, just in time for ArtFight. The same outfit as the original concept sheet, but I added fancy headphones for ignoring the inspector and dancing around the yellow tape.

Comic Sketch - MC using middle school dating methods like

My Hogwarts Mystery character tried to write a yes-or-no note to his crush in the new side quest despite being 15 years old and way past such weak proposals. It immediately reminded me of this scene from Gravity Falls, so I drew a picture for the HP:HM subreddit. It currently has 388 upvotes and is my highest-ever ranked post!
Update: 611 upvotes! I'm glad this piece went over well. I think the expressions made it.

Art - The Golden Phantom

I made some minor changes to Hayori's design for his (hopefully) final reference. Mostly tweaking the colors and making his gun harder to draw...again. (Why do I do this to myself?) I added some gold into the design as well.
I'm really proud of the shading! It's not perfect, but I rarely do multiple layers of soft shading.

Art Sketch - Kid the Phantom Thief

My post-semester drawing spree has ended, but I did this sketch of Kaitou Kid from Detective Conan since I love him so much (and since my sketch of Team Rocket was stalled since my pen pressure stopped working on Chickensmoothie). I did learn a lot about soft lighting and shading with this, though!

A sketch I did of a little Earth Kingdom girl giving a flower to a Dai Li agent. I've had this plot bunny about a renegade agent befriending a kid and trying to fight the corrupt organization. I feel like he'd rejoin and help fix the agency after the war ended!

A new character design I whipped up, trying to make something a little different. He doesn't have a name yet, but he lives in a junkyard and invents things with his rat friends. I almost gave him a raccoon instead but I thought the rats were more dynamic.
